Grand Canyon can experience intense lightning storms during the monsoon season between July and mid-September. On August 3rd, 2012, Sally and I found ourselves a short distance below the rim of the canyon as this storm approached. The lightning was over 10 miles away when we realized that a storm had developed behind us as well. Heading back to our truck meant moving up to the rim and exposing ourselves to the storm. With no good options, we elected to shelter below some massive boulders and overhanging rocks for almost 90 minutes. During this time, I created this image, which is a stack of 18 images shot back-to-back and merged in Photoshop (using a technique similar to creating star-trail photos) so that I could show the intensity of this storm. In total, I captured 48 lightning strikes in this image and it represents approximately 10 minutes of storm activity. Printed 30x45 inches as a metal float mount.

This was the final sunrise that I photographed as the Artist-in-Residence on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. After a week of blue skies and no clouds, it was truly a treat to photograph this scene and create this image. I’d like to thank the National Park Service for the opportunity to be the park’s Artist-in-Residence, and thank you to all the park rangers and staff of the Grand Canyon Association who shared their love for the canyon with me. All of the photos in The Grand Canyon - from Rim to River collection are available as matted prints. My most common size sold is an 8x10" print matted to 11x14". These prints are individually sealed in clear bags. I make my matted prints at my home studio in Flagstaff, Arizona, where I do all of the printing and matting myself.
The wholesale price for a matted print is $13.50, and they typically retail for $27.95.
