Photographing Monsoon Storms & Light at the Grand Canyon - 2023

Point Imperial is the highest viewpoint overlooking the Grand Canyon. At 8,803 feet above sea level, the temperature in the morning can drop down into the 40s, even in the heat of the summer. On a chilly morning, the first light of the day provides a welcoming warmth as the canyon is revealed before you.

In the distance, a gentle summer rain painted pink by the setting sun can be seen falling from the sky. From Vista Encantada on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Standing amongst the tall Ponderosa pine trees at Point Imperial on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon during the monsoon season, you are treated to a breathtaking spectacle of nature - a rainbow delicately arching gracefully over the iconic Mount Hayden and the majestic Grand Canyon itself. The setting sun, obscured by heavy monsoon clouds, casts a warm and ethereal glow across the landscape.
The Grand Canyon, with its immense size and intricate layers of rock formations, stretches out before you. Its rugged, multi-hued cliffs and deep crevices are dramatically illuminated by the soft, golden light of the setting sun, creating a surreal contrast against the dark, brooding storm clouds overhead. Mount Hayden, with its distinctive jagged peak, stands as a sentinel over the canyon. It's a moment of serenity and awe as the rainbow bridges the gap between the earth and the sky, a symbol of hope and beauty.
The sound of distant thunder rumbles softly, adding to the sensory experience of this enchanting moment. The scent of wet earth and desert plants permeates the air as the rain continues to fall gently, nourishing the canyon's life. It's a reminder of the power and fragility of nature, all encapsulated within the frame of this stunning rainbow, which slowly fades as the sun dips below the horizon, leaving behind a sense of wonder and reverence for the Grand Canyon and the monsoon season's captivating beauty.

After heavy rain from monsoon storms, clouds have formed within the Grand Canyon. They drift amongst the many buttes below the rim of the canyon including Siegfried Pyre. From Point Imperial on the North Rim of the canyon.

I am captivated by the breathtaking scene unfolding before my eyes. The Grand Canyon stretches out before me, a magnificent amphitheater carved by a river and time. Across the abyss, an ethereal curtain of rain descends into the canyon, backlit by the warm glow of the rising sun.
