Lightning Bug Plus
A lightning trigger is an electronic device that senses the lightning strike and triggers the shutter for you. It's important to understand that the trigger doesn't do all of the work for you. The photographer must still create the composition, determine the proper exposure, and pre-focus for the scene. With a lightning trigger, many new and exciting things are possible. Now, we can do previously impossible things, like photographing lightning in daylight and shooting into the setting sun.
My trigger of choice is the Lightning Bug Plus made by MK Controls. This trigger mounts into your camera's hot shoe and connects via a modified remote-release cable. I've owned four different lightning triggers, and I can say that while no lightning trigger catches every lightning bolt, I've been more productive with it than I have all of the others. I consider it to be an essential piece of gear and one that you must have if you wish to photograph lightning.
The sensitivity of the Lightning Bug Plus is adjustable to different shooting situations. This gives you full control over when to take the picture. If you only want to capture the brightest and boldest lightning bolts, you would decrease the sensitivity. If you want to capture lightning over the city or mountains from a long distance, you would increase the sensitivity. You can also limit the number of possible exposures per second to between 1 and 10. This feature allows you to capture repeated lightning strikes successfully. The Lightning Bug Plus is also designed to withstand exposure to rain. The design incorporates weather-resistant soft-touch buttons.
